$13M federal investment boosts green skills training for electrical workers
Canada's electrical workers are getting a major skills upgrade. The federal government announced nearly $13 million in funding for green training initiatives, with Secretary of State John Zerucelli unveiling the investment at an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers conference in Calgary on Monday.
The lion's share—close to $10 million—goes to the Western Joint Electrical Training Society for hands-on training of construction electricians. Another $3 million will teach Red Seal powerline technicians to use drones for maintenance work, helping cut greenhouse gas emissions. Together, the programs will train nearly 17,350 workers.
The investment supports Ottawa's ambitious plan to train nearly 30,000 tradespeople and double housing construction to 500,000 homes annually. As Canada transitions to a net-zero economy, workers need specialized green building skills—and these programs aim to deliver exactly that.
