Calgary airport's aerospace innovation hub is open for business
The Aerospace Innovation Hub at Calgary International Airport is now fully operational and ready to welcome startups, researchers, and industry partners. Managed by Innovate Calgary and the University of Calgary, the facility is designed to help aerospace ventures move from research to real-world products by connecting them with equipment, expertise, and industry connections.
A grand opening celebration is scheduled for January 13 to bring together university leaders, aerospace companies, investors, and community stakeholders.
Members get access to business advisory support, connections to corporate partners like YYC and WestJet, and opportunities to pitch to investors including Chapter.AI and UCeed. The facility also provides millions of dollars worth of prototyping equipment and labs.
Nima Najand, executive director of innovation and intellectual property at Innovate Calgary, says the facility matches the ambition of Alberta's aerospace industry. "It's a place where partners can see what's possible, contribute their expertise, and help shape the future of the aerospace sector in the province," he said.
The airport location gives innovators immediate access to industry partners and infrastructure. John Wilson, president and CEO of Innovate Calgary, says positioning at YYC helps innovators move faster from promising ideas to real-world aerospace solutions.
Calgary is working to establish itself as a destination for aerospace innovation, and the facility is meant to amplify local talent while attracting new players to the region. It joins Innovate Calgary's network of sector-focused innovation hubs in areas like life sciences and social innovation.
