Calgary’s Ayrton Energy wins big at Alberta Cleantech Awards

Women-led startup recognized for hydrogen carrier system at Inventures 2025.

Calgary-based startup Ayrton Energy is turning heads in the clean energy world. The women-led company was named Startup Venture of the Year at the Alberta Cleantech Awards, held this week at the Inventures 2025 Conference in Calgary.

Hosted by Foresight Canada, the annual event celebrates some of Alberta’s most promising cleantech innovators, funders, adopters, and supporters—those helping drive a shift towards a low-emissions, future-ready economy.

Founded in 2021, Ayrton Energy has developed a liquid organic hydrogen carrier system. In simple terms, it allows hydrogen to be stored and moved around using existing infrastructure and mirroring diesel logistics—making clean hydrogen much easier to adopt at scale. It’s a step forward in making hydrogen practical, safe, and scalable.

The company, which has grown to a team of 20, has already attracted significant public and private investment. And with deep roots in Calgary, Ayrton is helping position the city as a growing hub for clean energy and hydrogen innovation.

“Congratulations to this year's Alberta Cleantech Award nominees and winners! Your groundbreaking innovations not only lead the path to sustainable economic development but also powerfully represent Alberta's future proof economy,” said Jeanette Jackson, CEO of Foresight Canada.

The win is part of a bigger story: Alberta’s cleantech sector is gaining momentum, and Calgary startups like Ayrton Energy are helping lead the charge.
