Calgary startup lands funding to stop good food from going to waste

Knead Technologies has secured $248,675 to tackle one of food rescue's toughest challenges: getting perfectly good food to people who need it before it goes bad.

Knead Technologies secured $248,675 from the Canadian Food Innovation Network (CFIN) to pilot its Matching Modules platform with three partners: Leftovers Foundation, BluPlanet Recycling, and Metro Food Rescue. The funding came through CFIN's Foodtech Next Program, which announced $1.1 million for five Canadian startups on Monday.

The company's suite of tools uses AI to optimize delivery routes in real-time, intelligently match food donations with recipients based on food type and availability, and create a marketplace for one-time pickups. It's designed to address inefficiencies that currently slow down the food rescue process and prevent good food from reaching people who need it.

"Our goal has always been to make food rescue more efficient and scalable," said Lourdes Juan, CEO and co-founder of Knead Technologies. "This project is an important step toward reducing food waste and ensuring more food makes it to the people who need it most." The pilot will help validate the technology for broader adoption across the food sector.
