Rocky View County pauses new data centre applications as Alberta's boom accelerates

Rocky View County, which surrounds Calgary on its northern, eastern, and western sides, has voted to halt new applications to rezone land for data centre use while it works to establish clearer rules for such developments. The 5-2 vote will keep the pause in place until the county finishes its Emerging Sector Strategy and an accompanying regulatory framework, with that work expected to conclude in the fall.
The decision comes as Alberta has emerged as the dominant destination for data centre investment in Canada. According to research from York University's Schulich School of Business, cited by CBC, Alberta accounts for 92 per cent of the country's planned new data centre capacity while representing just 10 per cent of currently active facilities. The province has been actively courting large-scale developers, a push that culminated earlier this month in Meta's announcement of a $13 billion data centre complex north of Edmonton.
Rocky View County has already approved zoning for one project near Indus and is weighing another proposal near Langdon, but rejected a separate application near Balzac last year.
